About the Yamaska Literacy Council
Our Mission
The Yamaska Literacy Council is a not-for-profit English-language organization dedicated to improving literacy skills.
What do we do?
We train volunteers who provide one-on-one tutoring that is free, confidential and meets individual needs. Students are tutored by trained volunteers using a variety of techniques and materials, including the Each One Teach One method and philosophy, developed in 1930 by literacy pioneer, Dr. Frank Laubach. This method has proven highly effective in teaching adults how to read and write and is used in over 100 countries. All tutors receive a free 12-hour basic literacy tutor workshop. No prior teaching experience is needed to be a tutor.
The Council also provides outreach and service to individuals and families in partnership with other organizations, at the community, provincial and national levels.

- A variety of initiatives aimed at fostering literacy skills in youth, children and families
- Public awareness and recruitment activities
- Public scribe service
Whom do we serve?
