National Volunteer Week April 27th - May 3rd

Volunteers are the heart and soul of a community. By giving your time, your talent and your experience to the service of others, you are making a difference. As a literacy volunteer, your work touches the lives of people in so many ways - improved literacy skills are just part of the impact you have on your student. Self-esteem, confidence, and hope are part of what your volunteerism can help others to find within themselves.

A special thank you to volunteers!

THE TRAVELING STORYTELLER CAME TO TOWN!

Waterloo and Mansonville were visited March 4th by Ernie Hemingway, The Traveling Storyteller & Co.

While children were making Little Red Hen puppets during the first hour, adults were learning how to help their children discover the joy of reading. Hemingway described a five-step strategy to not only help a child become a good reader, but to understand what he has read. Looking at a book, its' illustrations, discussing the possible story before you read the text, all help to set the stage for reading comprehension. After reading the book, sharing activities related to the story continue the learning process.

During the second hour, everyone gathered together. After songs, and picture walks through many different versions of the Little Red Hen, the much anticipated show began. The Little Red Hen, too sick to keep house, had to depend on her four friends.

If you would like to see The Traveling Storyteller & Co. in action, they are regulars at The Storytelling Festival of West Brome, to be held this year August 16th & 17th.
