Promotion in Action

Karen SmithYLC welcomes Karen Smith and Shelley Rumsby who have been hired through the IFPCA project to promote YLC in the communities of Bedford and Cowansville, respectively.

A n a t i v e Newfoundlander, Karen Smith moved to Bedford, Quebec in 1998. Between 1994-2005 she worked for Laubach Literacy of Canada as Administrative Assistant. She currently coordinates a Parent-Child activity in Cowansville to raise awareness of the importance of early childhood development. She actively volunteers for the YLC and various other organizations. For 15 years, she has been teaching an exercise course in Bedford, is an independent bookkeeper, and has a growing photography business (note: YLC’s Literacy Exposed calendar). She brings loads of experience and energy to the position.

...a tremendous opportunity to help raise awareness about literacy issues…

Shelley RumsbyShelley Rumsby, a native Townshipper, is married and the mother of an 18 year old son. Her work background is varied - secretary, receptionist, bookkeeper, dental assistant - are but a few of the roles she has filled.

Since taking the Tutor Workshop in April of this year she has been excited about literacy!! Initially it seemed that the statistics for the area of Brome-Missisquoi were staggering and depressing. But then she realized that getting the training to help people who want to improve reading and writing skills is part of the answer to bringing these stats down. Being a promotion agent for YLC in the Cowansville area is a tremendous opportunity to help raise awareness about literacy issues in the community, and she is really looking forward to working on this exciting project!

Tutors and students,

Two fish swim into a concrete wall. The one turns to the other and says, "Dam!"We will be in touch with you in the next few weeks to see if you need anything. Check your shelves for resources you are no longer using and please return them. If you need new books and resources, come in and look around the Freda Hudson Reading Room. It will be nice to see you!
