YLC tutor, Don Davison launches book
Raise The Flag & Sound The Cannon is
based upon a raid by Confederate
soldiers that took place in St. Albans, Vermont, on October 10, 1964,
toward the end of the Civil War. The Confederacy was desperate for
money and arms. Why not hold up mercantile banks in Union towns
close to the U.S.- Canadian border and then retreat with the money
to the safety of Canada? The leader, Lieutenant Bennett Young, CSA,
declared, “Canada can’t arrest us. They’re neutral. We’ll call the raid
a military action.”
When Don Davison retired from banking and moved to Knowlton,
Quebec, he fell in love withthe land and people of the Eastern Townships
and neighboring Vermont.
He was fascinated by the history of the area and the connection
between Vermont and Quebec. After extensive research, he wrote Raise
the Flag and Sound the Cannon, which combines the mindset and reality
of a bloody war with fictional characters who could well have been
involved in this “most Northern battle of the Civil War”.
