Finding and understanding legal information can be a challenge for many people. For individuals with low literacy, the task is harder. Knowing our basic rights helps us make choices that are best for us.
The Yamaska Literacy Council developed a series of booklets on legal topics. Each topic has a manual for the student and the tutor;
Wills
Do I need a will?
How do I make a will?
What happens if I don’t have a will?
Health Law
What is consent to medical treatment?
How can I get access to my medical files?
What happens if there is an emergency?
Employment Law & Labour Standards
Am I entitled to a vacation?
What happens if I am fired?
Who pays for my uniform?
The Yamaska Literacy Council and Literacy in Action (Lennoxville), through a project funded by the Townshippers’ Foundation, have created a new tool for parents: “Learning with Your Child”. It offers tips for parents and caregivers of children from birth to five years old on how to create age-appropriate activities to stimulate a child’s love of reading. It’s never too early (or too late!) to start reading to children.
Research confirms that reading with children 15 minutes each day, improves their chances of developing the skills they need to succeed in learning to read and to write.
